A character actor who earned an Emmy for playing Uncle Wally on "Sesame Street" and a Tony for his role in the play, "Anything Goes," for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.
He made his film debut in 1964's "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians." Before that, his first major role was on "The Howdy Doody Show" as Leo the Leprechaun.
He played Shirley MacLaine's beau, Owen Jenkins, in "Steel Magnolias" from 1989.
He married Anne McCutcheon in 1952, and they had three children: Carol, Jay, and Kenna.
He and Bob McGrath both appeared together on "Sesame Street," with McGrath playing Bob Johnson.
