Bette Bao Lord

Chinese-American writer and civil rights activist who was awarded the first Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights in 1998. Her novel, Spring Moon, was nominated for an American Book Award in 1982.
She moved to the United States when she was eight and documented her experience in the children's book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson.
Her book Legacies: A Chinese Mosaic was a bestseller and was named one of the five best non-fiction works of the year by Time Magazine when it was published.
She married Winston Lord, who later became an ambassador to China, and they had two children.
She was awarded the Eleanor Roosevelt Award by President Bill Clinton.
