Her affair with British pilot Tom Campbell Black inspired her to become an aviator.
Her their memoir, "West with the Night," details her childhood in Kenya and her early experiences as a bush pilot.
She moved with her family from England to Kenya when she was four years old.
Her novel lay forgotten until 1982, when a reader discovered a reference to it in one of Ernest Hemingway's letters.
