Bernhard Lichtenberg
Religious Leader
German priest who was killed by the Nazis for openly protesting their persecution of Jews and the mentally ill.
He studied theology in Innsbruck, Austria and was ordained a priest in 1899.
He was awarded the title of Righteous among the Nations, an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination.
He was the oldest of five children.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1996.
