Innovative banjo player who gained fame as frontman for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and New Grass Revival.
He started playing the banjo at age 15 but also played the French horn in high school.
He won his 13th Grammy Award in 2012 for Life in Eleven in the Best Instrumental Composition category.
He married fellow banjo player Abigail Washburn in 2009.
He was a member of the group Trio! with bandmate Jean Luc Ponty.
