He started out as a journalist, writing several essays for newspapers including The New York Times.
His novel, 50, was praised by highly respected critic Stefan Kanfer as being a literary gift.
He and his now-deceased wife, Judy Corman, had two sons: Matthew and Nicholas.
Legendary actress Meryl Streep received an Oscar for Best Actress for her work in the film, Kramer vs. Kramer, which was based on his 1977 novel of the same name.
