Austin Peay

American politician who served as Governor of Tennessee from 1923 to 1927. He was Tennessee's first post-Civil War governor to win three terms in a row, as well as the first to die in office.
He studied at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.
He signed the Butler Act into law and therefore prohibited the teaching of the Theory of Evolution in public schools. This action precipitated the Scopes Trial of 1925.
He married Sallie Hurst in Clarksville, Tennessee in 1895.
He and Bill Haslam both served as Governor of Tennessee.
