Aruna Asaf Ali
Civil Rights Leader
Indian activist who is best remembered for hoisting the Indian National Congress flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan in Bombay in 1942.
She worked as a teacher at Gokhale Memorial School in Calcutta.
She protested the treatment of political prisoners by starting a hunger strike, while imprisoned at the Tihar Jail in 1932.
She married Congress party leader, Asaf Ali.
Both she and author Mahmoud Darwish were recipients of the International Lenin Peace Prize.
