He attended New York University and Columbia University.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.
He fathered two sons, Jonathan and Paul.
He collaborated on the film version of The Band Wagon with Howard Dietz.
