Wife of American Vice President Elbridge Gerry. Her husband served under the presidential administration of James Madison.
The daughter of an Irish merchant, she was born in New York but educated in Dublin.
She died at the age of eighty-five and was laid to rest in New Haven, Connecticut.
She married Elbridge Gerry in 1786 and gave birth to ten children between the late 1780s and the early 1800s.
She was the second Second Lady of the United States (after Abigail Adams, who held the title when her husband served as George Washington's vice president).
