The author of The Night Cache (novella) and The Pottawatomie Giant (short stories), he is known for his works of science fiction and fantasy, as well as for the southern settings of his short stories and novellas. His works have been nominated for the prestigious Hugo and Nebula Awards.
He worked for the Greensboro News & Record in North Carolina after graduating from the University of South Carolina. He later received his M.F.A. in fiction writing from the University of Alabama.
In 2005, he published a nonfiction work entitled Alabama Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat Stuff.
He was born in Batesburg, South Carolina. He later settled in Frostburg, Maryland with his wife Sydney.
