He graduated from Melbourne's Swinburne Film School in 1988 and directed his first film Chopper in 2000.
His 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford earned Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor.
He was previously engaged to actresses Robin Tunney and Bella Heathcote, the latter of whom he split with in 2018 after seven years of dating.
His second collaboration with Brad Pitt was 2012's Killing Them Softly.
