He kept his campaign promise by signing same-sex marriage legislation on June 24, 2011 because he believed that other states should look to New York for progressive direction.
He was married to Kerry Kennedy, the seventh child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, for 13 years and had three children with her. He dated TV chef Sandra Lee from 2005 until 2019.
Former Governor Mario Cuomo is his father.
