She received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT, taking a break from her studies to join the Peace Corps.
Her numerous inventions include the screen-less, motorized hammer mill and the phase-change incubator.
Her father, Arthur Smith, was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT.
She and transistor co-creator William Shockley were fellow MIT-educated inventors.
