He was a bright student in high school and graduated at age 16 without playing a single football game.
He was the first NFL coach to receive Coach of the Year honors in consecutive years.
His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants.
He made his Giants coaching debut as an offensive coordinator in place of Vince Lombardi.
