Her career began with the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy.
She won a Theatre World Award for her performance in the play Henry, Sweet Henry in 1968 and was also nominated for a Tony.
She was married to Joshua White until her death in 2011.
She wore heavy prosthetics to play Blixx in the fantasy film Legend, which starred Tom Cruise.
