About

Educator and conductor known for his 12 symphonies, eight operas, 17 string quartets, two cantatas, and 72 piano pieces. His works included "The Moon's Golden Horn" and "The Weird Flute." He composed music for "The Ship of Heaven," a Hugh McCrae play.

Before Fame

He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory between 1887 and 1891 with such notables as Gustav Schreck, Hans Sitt, and Oscar Paul.

Trivia

He became the President of the Composers' Society of Australia in 1947.

Family Life

He had three children with his first wife Sarah Brownhill Booth: Isolde, Tristan, and Elsa. His daughter Isolde became a well-known singer. He and Sarah divorced in 1921, and he married his former student, composer Mirrie Solomon.
