He was born in Caripito, Venezuela and was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Cubs in 1991.
He hit 55 runs in 2002, tying a Japanese single-season record.
His son, Ramon, has also played baseball professionally.
He tied the home run record set by revered Japanese player Sadaharu Oh in 1964.
