His knowledge base was wide and far-reaching. His interests included painting, poetry, and philosophy.
He became known for introducing audiences to then-modern composers like Debussy, Ravel, Cyril Scott, Scriabin, and Schoenberg.
His mother and older brother Daniel were his only teachers. He was largely self-taught.
He mentored pianist Glenn Gould for 10 years.
