He was captain of his high school's football team. He achieved fame for his 1933 musical film 42nd Street, which was written with Warren.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He married Helene McClay.
His song I Only Have Eyes for You was covered by Rod Stewart.
