He was a runner on Wall Street after high school. He and Comden met while she was a drama student at New York University.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980 and the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.
He married third wife Phyllis Newman in 1960. The couple had two children together, Adam and Amanda, who both became noted songwriters.
He and Comden frequently collaborated with Leonard Bernstein early on, and together they wrote On the Town, the classic musical.
