His studies of camouflage in the animal kingdom led to the development of military camouflage.
He spent his childhood in rural New Hampshire where he developed his lifelong fascination with nature. His first wife was Kate Bloede; after her death, he married Emma Beach.
His ideas regarding camouflage were opposed by Theodore Roosevelt.
